Diana Balsdon - Lady Captain 2007-2008
Diana's AGM Report - March 2008
The Ladies' Section has had an enjoyable year under the captaincy
of Diana Balsdon, ably supported by Frances Henderson, Vice-Captain, Sally
Morton leading the Business Ladies and the Ladies' Committee. Major events and
inter-club friendly matches were played in reasonable weather, including a very
successful Open Day Competition.
In the main, the Surrey Druce and Pearson competitions were held in
poor weather conditions. The Epsom Pearson team were, however, invited to
assist as 'Course Marshals' at the PGA BMW Championship at Wentworth Golf Club;
a first for Epsom and a most enjoyable and rewarding experience (see below). The
Lady Club Champion this year is Sam Beak.
The Lady Captain's Charity for the year was The Butterfly Centre at
Epsom General Hospital, with over £1,800 being raised during the year. Many
thanks to all who supported this worthy cause.
Planning of events to mark the centenary of the Ladies' Section in
2009 is under way.

BMW PGA Championship 2007 - Wentworth
The Ladies’ Section were asked to provide scorers for the first two rounds of the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth. On the Monday evening before the start of the tournament Chris Jones, Frances Henderson, Barbara Frith, Frances Collomosse, Sam Beak and Susan Ward enjoyed champagne and canapés in the BMW hospitality suite at the side of the 18th green on the West Course while being briefed on our duties. We each came home with a goody bag containing BMW/PGA logoed polo shirt, waterproof jacket and visor.
We all had an early start on Thursday morning and were each issued with a clipboard, hand held computer and radio with earpiece. Our duties were to keep a note of every stroke taken by the three golfers we were accompanying and on the completion of each hole, transmit the information, via computer back to the main electronic scoreboard. The radio was for checking any discrepancies, and calling for the referee, security or medical assistance.
Among the notable golfers in our groups over the two days were Darren Clarke, Jose Maria Olazabal, Henrik Stenson, Niclas Fasth, Sandy Lyle, Bradley Dredge, Shiv Kapur, the Indian golfer who lead the tournament briefly through the second round, and tournament winner Anders Hanson. Glimpses on TV of Barbara following Olazabal down the 18th and Frances C. calling for the referee when Kapur drove into a ditch were shown on BBC coverage.
The girls all agreed it was a fantastic privilege to be walking down the fairways, inside the ropes at such a marvellous tournament – and weren’t we lucky that over the first two days, we didn’t need the waterproof jackets!
