Ladies Charity Day - October
2008
The Club rallied
together to support Frances Henderson, the Lady Captain, on her Charity Day in
October. The weather did its best to dampen spirits but more than 16 teams made
the most of the 4-ball better ball competition to have some fun and raise £624
for Mencap, the charity for people who are born with or develop a serious
learning disability. “The Mid-Surrey branch of Mencap had their people carrier
vandalised and we have been able to make a real contribution to getting it back
on the road”, Frances said. “What was so nice was that we had teams of women,
men and mixed, including members of all ages taking part”, she
added.

Ladies English Open July 4th-6th 2008

21 ladies from Epsom went to The Oxfordshire by coach for the day and,
of course the Pimms, was opened half an hour into the journey...!!!
They had a wonderful time watching the
stars.
Ladies’ golf has been played on the
Downs for over a hundred years but it was not until 1909 that ladies were
officially admitted to membership of Epsom Golf Club. So next year the Ladies’
Section will be celebrating its centenary. In recent years the Junior Section
of the Club has grown and this includes the numbers of girls. My hope for my
year of office is that I will be able to witness an even larger increase. The
Junior Leader team recognises that girls have different needs to boys and this
determines their behaviour. They are social animals preferring to spend time in
developing relationships rather than letting of energy. So girls are sure of a
warm welcome not only from the Junior Section but also by the Ladies’ Section.
And girls can have as much fun as boys in playing golf. The handicap system
ensures that, as far as possible, they can play against boys on equal terms.
This year the Junior Captain is a girl. Let’s hope this is a sign of things to
come. Enjoy your golf.
