League/Cup Results 2007
Declan Reports on 8th October 2007;
Fairways Trophy:Having lost our first round match to Horne Park, we went into the Fairways Plate competition where we beat Surrey National in a sudden death playoff, having drawn 6-6 over two legs. James Pickard won the playoff on the 1st extra hole! We then met Leatherhead in the semi-finals and once again drew 6-6, but unfortunately this time we lost the sudden death playoff..
Kingston League: We ended up winning 6, drawing 1 and losing 1 match. We came second to Leatherhead by 1/2 point!
Keppler League: We finished with 4 wins and 1 loss. Epsom are joint winners of this League with Purley Downs.
U14s Rookie League - Epsom Runners-up: The results of the inaugural running of the Under 14 Rookie League saw Epsom narrowly pushed into second place by Betchworth Park, the only team to beat them in six games. Susan Ward, Competitions Organiser, in congratulating the team members on this achievement added, “This offered a good experience in match play to some of our younger members which could pay dividends in the future.”

Sophie |
At the Surrey Ladies County Golf Association (SLCGA) summer tournaments
for girls Epsom has been well represented with Sophie Stinton, at Hoebridge,
coming first and thus winning a chance ‘to play with Laura Davies’. In
the same week at Charterhouse she came second with 59 points but was ‘overtaken’
by fellow Epsom member Georgia Rudd with an astounding 62 points. Well
done to both.
Adult/Junior Foursomes

Sixteen pairs took part in the 2007 Adult/Juniors Foursomes Competition.
The winners were Robert Munro and James Pickard. They are pictured here
with the Club President Roy Light.
In second place were Ria Gregory and George Irwin.

Follow that!
Following her sucess in the final of the Wee Wonders, played on the Balgrove course at St Andrews in August, in coming runner-up on count back, Claire Olney learnt that she had been selected to represent Great Britain in the World Championships (US Kids) to be held in San Diego, California in 2008. (Here she is with Colin Montgomerie who presented her with her prize!) Click for the Official Wee Wonders site.
And following her efforts a few days later at Drayton Park in Oxfordshire on the British Junior Golf Tour, carding a score of 30 for 9 holes (where the par is 27), her best ever, she won her age group also beating the boys.

 |
And following her sucess in the British Junior Golf Tour Final at the Belfry,
in winning her age group by an enormous margin of 11 shots, qualifying
her for the Callaway World Championships, Claire was then invited to the
Golf Show at the NEC, Birmingham where she was interviewed for West Midlands
BBC, had her picture taken with Willie Thorne (of snooker fame), had a
lesson with Gary Alliss (the professional at the Belfry) who praised her
swing, joined in the Trick Shot Show (hitting a ball whilst kneeling) and
is to be featured in Golf Monthly Magazine as "Junior of the Month"
(Dec/Jan edition coming out approximately 3rd December).
Congratulations! We can't wait to see what more there is to come. |

Juniors Survive the Elements
Despite rain showers of monsoon proportions the Juniors held their Club Championship on 21st July and did not allow the conditions to impair their performances. Scott Howieson won the Scratch Cup with a gross score of 73 and George Irwin the Handicap Cup with a nett score of 64.
Scott then went on to play in the Junior Open at Tyrrells Wood where he again carded the best gross score (149 for 36 holes) with team-mate, Nathan Dillon securing the best nett (141 for 36 holes). Nathan also won the ‘nearest the pin’.
Congratulations to all three. |

Tom Beats the Men at Their Own Game
Having won the mid-week qualifying competition with 42 points Tom Fishlock went on to win the Sperring Cup the following Sunday with 41 points and now enjoys a handicap of 10. Well done, Tom, at this rate you could be off scratch by the end of the summer holidays! |
Junior Open outstanding Success
Teams of juniors from 10 clubs assembled at Epsom to compete for the David Franklin Trophy, inaugurated last year. Winners were the team from Tyrrells Wood, who with a combined strokeplay score of 207 (an average of par for each player) retained the trophy. Second place saw Cuddington with 210 pipping Epsom’s own team by one stroke. The lowest scratch score was achieved by Ben Wheeler from Purley Downs with a gross 74.
The afternoon game was an individual stableford and three players each amassed 45 points. Dan Morris, of Purley Downs, won on count back from Harry Carpenter (Banstead Downs) with Epsom’s Holly Stacey coming 3rd.
Reports from competitors suggested that everyone had enjoyed the competition, the course and the hospitality. The Captain and Lady Vice-Captain attended to present the prizes with David Franklin also in attendance to present the trophy to the winners. He paid especial tribute to Susan Ward's excellent organisation ot the event. David is pictured here with the winning team from Tyrrells Wood.

Following a last position place at the Surbiton Invitation Event for teams of 1 adult and 3 juniors, in the morning round, and then refreshed by lunch the Epsom team (Susan Ward, Kimberley Munro, Nathan Dillon and Jamie Debrou, pictured here) soared into first position in the afternoon Texas Scramble. Well done to them; in future remember to have your lunch before the morning round!
