Kimberly breaks her own Course record!
Kimberley’s gross 75 on the 15th June had earned her the new ladies course record. Then on 10th August she broke that by one with a gross score of 74. Her recent successes over the summer holidays – winning the Daily Telegraph Qualifier at West Hill and Bletchingley, joint 3rd gross (8th on c/b) and 2nd nett at the SE Girls Championship at Copthorne and playing well below her handicap in a Open at Woodcote has seen Kimberley’s handicap fall from 11 to 7 in just 3 months.

Kimberley was also selected to play for the Surrey team (pictured above) at Junior County Week which was held at Wyke Green Golf Club. She won 3 out of her 4 matches, played off scratch and Surrey came 3rd out of the 5 counties.

Junior Open - 4th August
9 teams (3 in each) took part (inc 2 Epsom teams). They played a medal round in the morning where all 3 scores counted and were playing for the Franklin Trophy. The afternoon round was an individual stableford. The weather was kind, it was enjoyed by all and click for the result sheet which you will see shows our own Epsom B team winning the Franklin Trophy; Nilesh Patel winning the lowest gross score in the morning; Nathan Dillon winning nearest the pin, Tom Fishlock winning longest drive and Elliott Wood taking 3rd prize in the afternoon. The Vice Captain and Lady Captain presented the prizes and David Franklin was there to present the trophy and team prizes. Photos available soon.

Claire's trip to the US
Claire Olney has returned from America and was successful. She was 5th (out of 43) in the Calloway World Championship played in San Diego and picked up a lovely trophy which was a first for an English girl. She played 18 holes over 3 days scoring 64, 63 and 60 (course par was 58). Then it was off to North Carolina to play in the World (US) Kids Championship where she finished a very respectable 17th out of 63 (Web ). There she played 9 holes over 3 days scoring 40, 44 and 39 (course par was 36). She also picked up a silver plate on one of the days for her score being the 8th best score. Her dad has taken photos and will be forwarding these to David (once their luggage and golf clubs which did not return with them!!) have been sent on to them!
Phew!!!
Ben Partridge wins at the Wee Wonders!

One of our youngest new members, Ben Partridge aged 6, won the wee wonders regional final at Hever Castle in July. He is now through to the Grand Final to be played at St Andrews over the August bank holiday. The format of wee wonders is that you have 36 shots and then you stop. Ben got to the 9th green.

Well played!!

Junior Club Championship
Kimberley Munro (77) won the scratch trophy and Anthony Edwards (65) won the handicap trophy.
See the News Page for photos. 18 Juniors took part.

A New Course Record for Kimberly!
Winner of Golden Jubilee Cup played on 15th June was Kimberley Munro with a gross 75.
This is a new course record for the ladies. Well Played indeed.
Claire's trip to Scotland;

Claire played at Gullane Golf Club, Scotland in May where she was competing in the US Kids European Championship. This was the first time the US Kids competition has been played outside the United States in Scotland. 480 kids from 34 different countries competed in this event which was played over 3 days. Claire was one of 5 girls from Surrey. In the 8 and under category which was 27 holes over three days, Claire came 4th with a score of 117. Her scores were 5 over on day 1, level par on day 2 and 4 over on the 3rd day. The course was par 36. This was an excellent result, especially as she suffered from an ear infection which she picked up on the first day.

Juniors Go One Better at the ProAm!

The Junior Team, again sponsored by Nick Browne, acquitted themselves well at the Pro-Am. Members may recall that last year they came second but this year they went one better. Yes, the team of Junior Captain, Kimberley Munro, with John Radley and Tom Fishlock, with a score of 12 under par won this prestigious event. (School exams prevented Holly Stacey and Jamie Debrou who were in last year's team from playing).
There were a few damp eyes in the crowd when they received their prizes. John also won the nearest the pin on the 10th hole, where he secured a birdie 2.
Well done to them and thanks to Nick for his continued support.

John Makes Progress in Surrey
Congratulations to John Radley who got through to the 5th round of the Surrey Boys’ Knock-out competition. Rumour had it that he was the one to beat. Well done, John.
(He is the one on the left in the Pro-Am photo.)
Fairways Trophy sees a Reversal in Fortune
Drawn against last year’s winners, Woodcote Park, Epsom lost 4-2 there and needed a substantial win at home to secure a place in the next round. The team of Kimberley Munro, Nathan Dillon, James Pickard, Tom Fishlock, John Radley and Steven George triumphed with a 5 ½ to ½ win, most matches being decided by a small margin, a win nevertheless, by 7 ½ to 4 ½ overall.
Junior Captain and Vice-Captain show the way

In the Surrey Schools Golf Association at the end of March, at Chipstead GC, Kimberley Munro, Epsom’s Junior Captain, shot 76 (7 over par) to win the girls’ gross competition by 5 shots. As it was a non-qualifying event it did not count for handicap purposes. She then played at West Surrey GC in their Mixed Junior Open, shooting a 79, again 7 over par, and winning the Girls’ Daily Telegraph Qualifier. In the handicap competition she equalled the score of the runner-up but after count-back was ‘relegated’ to third place. (This time she did get cut and now plays off 10.8)
Kimberley was then joined by her Vice-Captain, James Pickard, for the Walton Heath foursomes, an invitation event, where they came 4th overall. In their afternoon round, however, where they carded 39 points, they came 2nd and as the ones in first place were the overall winners, they were awarded the afternoon prize.
Clem gets Another First for Epsom Juniors
Following the recent decision of the PGA to allow amateurs to gain coaching qualifications, albeit only at the preliminary level, Epsom now has its own Level One Coach.
He is Clem Simpson, whose licence is shown above. The course, by all accounts was a very arduous one that attracted a number of Assistant Professionals from some of the larger clubs, Clem being one of the fewer amateurs sharing the course.
He is to be warmly congratulated. His success, it is hoped, will inspire more adults to offer themselves for the course, and enable a comprehensive package of coaching to be offered to Epsom’s Junior Members.
Georgia Starts the Year with Determination

Congratulations to Georgia Rudd who just before Easter in a girls' competition at Droitwich, for those without handicaps, came an outstanding 3rd out of 24 competitors. She hopes to use this as a springboard to gain an official handicap. Very well done, George, we're very proud of your efforts.
Epsom team in the Christies Cup
The first round of the Christies Cup was played at the end of December 2007 in cold and blustery conditions. This competition is for teams of three, each playing singles with an opponent, and going out in handicap order, with the best two stableford scores aggregated. If these scores are level the third player’s score is taken into account.

The first round resulted in a win for Epsom who then travelled to Addington Palace, again on a cold and windy day. The team of Nathan Dillon, Tom Fishlock (deputising for Nilesh Patel who had gone to Canada to ski) and Jamie Debrou put in an outstanding performance and won by 3 points.

At Shirley Park, in the next round, they were able to maintain their winning form scoring 68 points against Shirley Park's 65.
The following round was played at Camberley Heath where Nilesh (with 39 points), Nathan (35) and Jamie (33), all good enough to secure a win in normal circumstances, were beaten by the home team who carded 45, 35 and 34 points respectively. So they were beaten but not bowed and can be proud of their efforts. Well done to them.

Keep up the good work!
Keppler League

Epsom beat Woodcote Park 4 – 2 & Banstead Downs (home) 3 ½ - 2 ½ In July

Under 14s Rookie League
The first match was played against Royal Mid Surrey at home, the format being teams of 4 playing 4-ball better ball. The scoring is one point for a win and ½ for a drawn game. Epsom’s pairings were Holly Stacey with Callum Patterson and George Irwin with Sam Eccles. The former won on the 18th and the latter 3 and 1, so securing the maximum 2 points.
The second round, against Banstead Downs, saw Epsom winning 2 – nil with Elliott Wood/Calum Patterson winning 5 and 4 and Holly Stacey/Jack Avery winning 3 and 1.
The result of match played against Goal Farm at Goal Farm on 31 May was 1 match lost and 1 match halved. Team was Holly Stacey and Jamie Debrou and Sam Eccles and George Irwin
The U14 Rookie league team have continued their success at Betchworth Park on Saturday 21st June by winning 2 – 0.
The match against Surbiton that was to have been played on 29th June was a walk over as Surbiton could not field a team. We have now finished our matches and look in a favourable position to win the group.
Claire starts year with a bang!

What a start to 2008 for Claire Olney! In a field of 20 boys and girls at Wavendon GC (Milton Keynes) she shot 39 for 9 holes in adverse weather conditions, coming second overall and winning the girls' tournament. In this she beat a 12 year old into second place. But that's not all.
No, more importantly, Claire has qualified for the US Kids European Open Championship, a tournament to be played in May at Gullane, Scotland (a new event in its first year). To be eligible past achievements are taken into account, in Claire's case her successes on the British Junior Golf Tour. She was one of 12 juniors whose Tour successes made them eligible. She had to present a resumé of her achievements to the US Kids Tournament Committee for consideration. In her case it was thumbs up and we now wish her every success, not only at Gullane but throughout the year (see abobve).
Well done, Claire!
